Hi Larry,

I'd like to see some closeups, maybe some colored backgrounds in some of those shots. The third pic is approaching what I mean. But I still can't really see the wood. You can see the outline and proportions, but the details are downplayed a lot.

I beleive you have something really gorgeous there, but the photography hasn't released it fully. I feel like I'm looking at it from behind a glass panel, out of reach, too far away to see any detail.

Pick up a guitar and inspect it. Those are the angles that your photography needs to capture. I inspect up close, turning it over, looking down the neck from the headstock, looking in the soundhole at the kerfing, the tail wedge, etc. That's how we do it. Make your photographer actually sit down and HANDLE your guitar. Make him or her tell you what details should be captured. Does that description match yours? They'll begin to get the potential BUYER'S perspective. I think I'd have a very serious sit down with my photographer. You can't afford to let these details slide by even if the photography is free! They need to be just as detailed as you are.

If photography is the media, the photos need to convince the world that you've got world class written all over you - capture the organic nature of wood: the texture, color, the grain, the trim, all those details that make your mouth drool. One shot at a 10' distance tells me it's an OM. But I want to see more shots closer than 10' away.


I struggled with pm' ing you, but I thought this might help others along too.


I beleive you have a great instrument. Make your photography be a partner in revealing that.

EDIT: I should say that Larry is one of the few OLF buddies I have spoken to on the phone and written to often. He is one of the finest guys around. He has a furniture building background, so I know his skills are there. He is a professional pilot, so I know his attention to every detail are there. He is a man of God and so his integrity is there. I would be at his house a lot if he lived near by. :)

I think VERY highly of Larry and really want to see him succeed. I will do whatever I can to help others on the way.

Really nice guitar, Larry. Very understated. I like the simplicity that the small rosette imparts.

More unsolicited constructive criticism. I agree with Terry. And it appears to me as if the photographer was afraid to get close.

The photos need some warmth and intimacy. Here's an area where builders who do their own photography often seem to excel. While the technical aspects might not be up to the highest professional standards, we more often get up close, right in the guitar's face, peering at details using the camera as the eyes of someone turning it over in their lap. I like Judy Threet's photographer's approach, as an example.

Gorgeous guitar, though. That dark binding with the HB is elegant.

Thanks for all the input guys! (Terry, I really needed that! Thanks for the critique and the kind words!) Believe me, I'll never be offended by the opinions of anyone on this forum regarding my work! Ironically, these are the first photos I've paid for! A quickie mall studio called Portrait Innovations...the work is technically sound, but you're all correct in that the "eye" for photographing an instrument isn't there...most of their time is with babies and families...I'll be that "eye" could be developed though...I'll make sure to speak up and suggest more next time! I'll see if I can get some close-ups for you!

Hi Larry,

If you use them again, take along some pix of other people's work as an example. Set some standards and goals for you and them of what you want accomplished.

EX: to reveal as much detail in the photos as if you were actually holding it in your hands looking at it (6" to 24")

Limited "portrait" shots. Make angle interesing

Note to self regarding lighting in portrait studios : guitars reflect a lot of light compared to people!Compensate...

Get your camera out and start imitating the angles of yor favorite pix of others' guitars. YOU CAN DO IT! WE CAN HELP. I'd bet at least 5 of us on OLF would do it for you for free if you sent them your guitar. I know I sure would. I'm not the most qualified though for sure! HOWEVER, if you can make furniture, guitars and fly a commercial aircraft, you can do it yourself, IF you have the time. Maybe get one of your girls to take a crack at it.

What I'm getting at is that you have what it takes to make great guitars. Just need to prove it visually.

Players are looking at the following criteria:

Aesthetics
Sound
Feel/Playability

You can really get em hooked with good photos and some sound clips. And that's a good bit of the challenge right there.

Now send me that guitar around Christmas, and I'll get you some purty shots against some Christmas decorations

Nonetheless, I can see enough of the guitar to know that I like it. In fact, I did one just like that once, and still admire the combo. Nice work, clean execution.
